The Cool Kids - Live at S.O.B.’s 4/6/08

Pez and I just got back from The Cool Kids first-ever headlining show in NYC with opener Mickey Factz. We’ve been rocking their EP, Totally Flossed Out, for the past couple of weeks and jumped at the chance to see their gig at S.O.B.’s.
There’s something to be said for The Cools Kids, errr, coolness—particularly that of Chuck Inglish. Chuck busted out some slick dance moves and held the crowd’s attention with stories of middle school dances and run-ins with the fuzz. Unlike plenty of other rappers, the duo didn’t run around on stage begging for attention (unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Factz). They banged through Flossed-favorites “Black Mags” and “I (Mikey) Rock” with the same laid back vibe heard on their recordings.
It was a good time, overall, but I think I have an issue with live hip-hop, in general. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like all MCs feel the need to shout over the bass to the point where the melody of their rhyme is so monotonous that it loses its charm. This was the case tonight.
I noticed that on Brooklyn Vegan’s review of their show at NYU with Crystal Castles (and in any other photos I’ve seen of them) they donned bright colors, American Apparel and hipster shades. Interestingly, they were toned down at this show, I’m guessing, to play S.O.B.’s hip-hop crowd right.
The show ended abruptly, without any grand finale. After about 20 minutes of “hey, remember this song from the 90s” and multiple guest rappers doing their things, Mikey Rocks and Chuck peaced out. No last song, but the Kids were nice enough to stick around and mingle with the kids for a bit.
